The Motherlode Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation which exists for the purpose of promoting the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and presenting programs that honor his life and the ideals he embodied through his work.
The Motherlode Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee has continuously presented an annual MLK birthday event each January since 1996. Our purpose in doing this is to increase awareness of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s principles and their relevance to the social issues confronting our community today. Though he was killed 45 years ago, Dr. King’s message of social justice and non-violent activism continues to resonate, even growing in importance and influence throughout the world. We hope to inspire people to engage in social justice activism and to help create the Beloved Community which Dr. King worked to achieve.
The annual program includes a speaker addressing a particular theme and an essay/art contest for Tuolumne County students. Music is always an important component of the program. Committee members carefully choose the theme of each observance, based on Dr. King’s teachings and philosophy, during planning meetings throughout the year.
Recent programs have addressed peace, health care, immigration and social justice, inequality, hunger and homelessness, economic justice, transformative and restorative justice. Recent speakers have included Dolores Huerta, Jim Hightower, Fr. Roy Bourgeois, Dr.Claiborne Carson, Dr. Mimi Kim, and Carmen Perez.
In conjunction with the birthday observance, we sponsor an art and essay contest addressing Dr. King’s message with cash prizes awarded. The winner reads the essay or explains the art project during the event. All submissions are displayed at the reception following the program.
As a non-profit, all-volunteer organization, we receive tax-deductible donations from community members. Sonora Area Foundation and Black Oak Casino have provided some financial support and Sonora Union High School donates the use of their auditorium, but mostly we rely on individual donations. Whatever you can offer will be greatly appreciated. You can mail your tax-deductible donation to:
